Universal Studios Greenlights “Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift” Coaster

Universal Studios Hollywood is revving up for a major new thrill ride inspired by one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises. The theme park announced plans Tuesday for “Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift”, its first high-speed outdoor roller coaster set to open in 2026.

The innovative coaster will be themed around Universal Pictures’ blockbuster Fast & Furious films. It aims to immerse riders in the high-octane world of the street racing saga through a state-of-the-art ride system employing cutting-edge technology.

Key features will include individual ride vehicles designed after cars from the movies that can rotate a full 360 degrees as they tear along the coaster’s track at furious speeds. The track is also being built with specialized sound reduction materials for an ultra-smooth, realistic drifting experience.

“‘Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift’ will be a powerful game changer that will infuse a new level of thrill into our already dynamic theme park,” said Scott Strobl, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Studios Hollywood. “We are excited to introduce our very first, high-speed outdoor roller coaster.”

The coaster’s circuit will wind over portions of the Upper Lot, with queue lines modeled after a car garage setting. Once onboard vehicles styled after signature muscle cars and imports featured in the films, riders will rocket along an elevated track simulating the intense drifting driving scenes that helped propel the Fast & Furious series to over $7 billion in global box office sales.

The new coaster joins an already stellar lineup of attractions bringing beloved properties to life, from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD to Jurassic World—The Ride. Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift aims to raise the gameplay for Universal’s slate of immersive attractions appealing to thrill-seekers.

The ambitious project continues Universal Studios Hollywood’s legacy of transporting guests into the worlds of popular entertainment franchises through a seamless blend of ride artistry and filmmaking magic since its origins as a working movie studio.
